Endocrine Function of the Postmenopausal Ovary

Christopher Longcope, MD

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Medicine, University of Massachusetts Medical School, Room S4-721, 55 Lake Avenue North, Worcester, MA 01655-0321; christopher.longcope{at}umassmed.edu

The overies of postmenopausal women are smaller than those of premenopausal women and consist primarily of stromal cells. These cells have receptors for, and respond to, gonadotropins and secrete testosterone and lesser amounts of other androgens and estrogens. The ovaries of some postmenopausal women contain P-450 aromatase and secrete estradiol. There is little evidence that inhibins A or B are secreted by postmenopausal ovaries.

Key Words: Androgens and estrogens • postmenopaulsal ovary • stromal cells • inhibin • gonadotropins
